The Romans prized wild strawberries for their medicinal properties and the ancient Egyptians used them to treat acne. Surprise, surprise, they were on to something! Strawberries are rich in nutrients that our skin loves to dine on, which makes strawberry skin care really add up.
With a high content of alpha-hydroxy acids, strawberries help slough off dead skin cells, increasing natural skin renewal by revealing the new youthful skin underneath.
Strawberries are rich in salicylic acid, which is commonly found in many commercial acne cleansers for a very good reason. Salicylic acid is able to penetrate deep within the pore to help exfoliate and cleanse the skin from dirt, oils, and free radicals that cause acne.
Strawberries also contain ellagic acid, which helps protect the skin from UV rays. Overexposure to UV rays leads to a decrease in collagen production which, in turn, can speed up the aging process.
Don't forget the antioxidants that all berries are known for! Strawberries are rich in Vitamin C which plays an important role in collagen production. Collagen helps skin maintain its structure and minimizes fine lines and wrinkles. Ounce for ounce, strawberries have more Vitamin C than citrus fruits!
Did you know that strawberries can also be used for conditioning and toning due to all their power-packing nutrients? They help to tone the skin, lighten pigmentation problems, and promote smooth and supple skin to the surface.
