On top of that, they come with a list of ingredients we'd rather avoid, like artificial coloring, polysorbate 80 (used to keep the pickles firm) and of course “natural flavor” (which is a legal loophole that allows companies to make their own artificial flavors in labs).

Ingredients

2-3 small cucumbers, cut into spears
3 Tbsp white vinegar
1 Tbsp salt
1 Tbsp dried dill
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional, omit if you don't like it spicy!)
4 cloves garlic, minced
Distilled or filtered water (learn why it's important to filter your tap water and which filters really work)

Directions

  1. Add the first 6 ingredients to your quart mason jar, and fill to the top with water.⠀
  2. Put on the lid and shake well. Let it sit on the counter for 12 hours, then turn upside down and let sit for another 12 hours.⠀
  3. Store in the refrigerator and snack away!
